1. Alison Steadman Helped Larry Lamb Secure the Role as Mick

Larry Lamb (Mick) and Alison Steadman (Pam) recently sat down to reveal behind-the-scenes Gavin & Stacey secrets on the Table for Four podcast, hosted by the show’s leads Joanna Page (Stacey) and Matthew Horne (Gavin).
During the episode, Larry revealed he had to fight for his role as Mick, as the director wasn’t convinced he was right for the part after reading with Ruth Jones.
As a result, he was invited back for a second audition alongside Alison Steadman, who initially refused to do so, believing they should give Larry the part, as she’d worked with him 10 years earlier.
As the director stated Larry would have to read with him, which could have hampered Larry’s chances, Alison agreed to read with Larry at his audition, with their chemistry helping him land the iconic role of Mick Shipman.
2. James Corden Hates the Second Episode of Series 1

During his attendance at the BBC Comedy Festival in Liverpool in May 2026, James Corden admitted he hates the second episode of the first series of Gavin & Stacey.
The Tony Award-winning actor stated it was a “very, very, very bad half-hour,” due to the romantic proposal backing him and co-writer Ruth Jones “into a corner.”
Ruth Jones and the show’s director, Christine Gernon, agreed with Corden, as he said, “It’s an awful episode.”
If you can’t recall it, it’s the episode where a huge misunderstanding over the phone causes Stacey to believe Gavin has broken up with her, resulting in Gavin travelling to Barry Island to win her back.
However, James Corden believes the greatest outcome from the episode was the introduction of Pam and Mick’s bickering neighbours, Pete and Dawn.
3. Russell Tovey is the Only Cast Member from Billericay
Gavin & Stacey fans might be shocked to discover that only one person from the cast hails from Billericay, and it’s none of the main members.
Russell Tovey, who plays Budgie, was born and raised in the Essex town of Billericay.
Larry Lamb recently told Radio Times, “I’d not worked with Russell other than in Gavin & Stacey, but when we found out that the reason it was based in Billericay was because James Corden asked Russell when they were working together on History Boys, ‘We’ve got this character, we’ve got this thing, where would he be from, do you think?’ and Russell said Billericay. That’s it, that’s how Billericay got in it, but that was about all that Billericay featured.”
4. Glenda, the Real Barry Homeowner, Earned Two Shoutouts

The real owner of Gwen’s house in Barry Island is called Glenda, and she would happily open her doors to the cast and crew for filming and welcome tourists.
To show their appreciation for her hospitality, Ruth Jones and James Corden gave two shout-outs to Glenda, with her name appearing twice throughout the series.
5. Buzz Lightyear Appears in Series 2
Blink and you’ll miss Buzz Lightyear in the Series 2 finale of Gavin & Stacey. During the scene when Nessa is in labour in the hospital, Buzz Lightyear appears in an x-ray scan above Pam’s head.
As it was too expensive to create a real medical scan, the graphics team provided a medical scan of Buzz Lightyear, which includes his recognisable chest plate and wings. Make sure you press pause the next time you watch the episode.
6. The Jamdani Hash Was Added to a Restaurant’s Menu

Every Gavin & Stacey fan remembers the scene where Nessa and Smithy refuse to share food.
Most will remember the moment Nessa describes her favourite order from an Indian restaurant, the “Jamdani Hash.”
The fictional dish, which is duck marinated with honey and lime, was later added to the menu at the Welsh restaurant Mint and Mustard in 2010, which received a flood of orders from Gavin & Stacey fans.
7. The 2019 Christmas special Was Almost Scrapped

Ruth Jones stated the 2019 Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special almost didn’t happen. She said when she met with James Corden over Facetime to get started, the initial script was flat, and they decided to scrap the project.
Fortunately, when the duo met for dinner with their partners, a relaxed conversation sparked inspiration, causing them to rewrite the script.
8. Ruth Jones’ Nephew Starred in the 2008 Christmas special
The 2008 Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special is arguably one of the most iconic episodes of the series, as few fans can forget Nessa dressed as Father Christmas.
The little boy who sits on her knee in the gazebo grotto is Ruth Jones’ nephew, Zakk, who was chosen for the scene.
Thanks to their close relationship, Ruth Jones knew he wouldn’t feel intimidated while sitting on her lap, helping him deliver the funny lines with ease.
Ruth Jones has mentioned in various interviews that it’s her favourite moment of the episode, especially as Zakk is now an adult with a driving licence.
9. Gavin & Stacey Was Inspired by James Corden’s Best Friend

Gavin and Stacey’s love story was inspired by James Corden’s real best friend, also called Gavin, who met his future wife on a work-related phone call.
Corden was inspired by the unique love story, leading to the creation of one of the most iconic comedy shows of the noughties.
10. Smithy is Based on James Corden’s Cousin

In addition to being inspired by his best friend’s real-life romance, James Corden also based his character Smithy on his cousin, Lee Andrews.
It is believed his cousin inspired Smithy’s loud, defensive, and larger-than-life personality.
The depiction also didn’t upset Andrews, as production interviews prove he loves being associated with Smithy and continues to have a close relationship with James Corden.
11. Barry Island is the Inspiration Behind Stacey’s Ex-fiancés

Most true Gavin & Stacey fans can easily name all of Stacey’s ex-fiancés: Hywel, Kyle, Leighton, Achmed, and Clifford.
However, you might not know that their names are actually based on real streets, local businesses, and local figures in and surrounding Barry Island and Cardiff.
