The River Dee provides locals and tourists with the most picturesque views in the town.

The whole family will enjoy a pleasant stroll along the scenic riverbanks to absorb the beautiful view, especially on a sunny day. There are also plenty of spots for a picnic, too.

I’ve personally enjoyed a chilled gin and tonic in The Corn Mill pub, and can say it’s a fantastic place to visit for a drink with a gorgeous view.

If you can take your eyes off the clear views of the River Dee, you will have plenty of fantastic dishes to choose from on the menu.

It’s a must-visit after a long walk or a day of exploring Llangollen. However, I recommend booking a table at the pub in advance to avoid disappointment, as it’s popular with locals and tourists.

3. Visit Horseshoe Falls

Horseshoe Falls is a must-visit when in Llangollen. The half-circular weir will take your breath away from the moment you set your sights on it, and can be found three miles away from Llangollen.

You can trust the waterfalls will be worth the effort, and it is a superb place to visit for a family picnic, and there’s plenty of land for the kids to run and play.

However, it’s important to note that you’ll need to walk up a steep slope to reach the weir, which could be a tad difficult for those with young children or mobility issues. If you have older or quite energetic children, it likely won’t be a problem.

4. Check Out Chirk Castle

Chirk Castle has stood proudly for more than 700 years and offers many stories that will trigger your kids’ imagination, offering historic two-level dungeons and eerie murder holes.

When you’re not busy exploring the National Trust castle, you can roam 480 acres of parkland.

It’s an ideal spot for some family fun, a picnic, or a long walk outdoors. However, if you don’t want to pack sandwiches and sausage rolls, the whole family can dine at the onsite restaurant or grab a snack as you stroll through the grounds.

Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for wild ponies and sheep in the fields, too. Review the calendar before you visit, as you could time your trip for an unmissable seasonal event.

Llangollen Wharf is easily one of the best family-friendly activities in Llangollen. You and the kids can take a motorised aqueduct cruise across the Pontycysyllte Aqueduct or enjoy a horse-drawn boat trip along the main canal’s feeder.

Whatever option you choose, you will absorb magnificent views of the Llangollen Canal. However, it is important to note that this trip isn’t baby-friendly, as there are no baby-changing facilities available and you can’t use a pushchair.

Plas Newydd is a 14th-century country house that was lovingly restored during the Victorian era and remodelled during the 1930s.

It once served as the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby for 50 years and now serves as a stunning museum.

Guests can explore the beautiful cottage and enjoy the beauty of its stained glass, oak carvings, and historic architecture.

The kids will be happy to spend many an hour exploring the beautiful gardens, and their mouths are bound to water as soon as they step inside the venue’s tearoom serving delicious homemade cakes.

7. Walk Up Castell Dinas Bran

Castell Dinas Bran, a dramatic medieval castle perched on a scenic hilltop, is a superb activity for families with teens.

The hike might be short in size, but the vertical climb is bound to test your calf muscles, which is why it’s wise to tackle it with older children.

Your hard work and effort will be worth it once you reach the top, as it offers stunning castle ruins and a 360-degree view for miles that will take your breath away.

There is a traditional tearoom at the bottom to sit down, relax, and enjoy a well-deserved bite to eat.

8. Travel Along Llangollen Railway
